Services
The Kootenay Boundary Community Services Co-operative plans and delivers a range of programs (ongoing activities) and projects (time-limited activities).
These programs and projects are all accountable to the communities of the region through the KBRR Co-op’s volunteer Board of Directors. Management of these services is shared among the member organizations or through a small administrative support staff.

Programs:
- Aboriginal Family Support, funded by the Ministry of Children and Family Development, provides support and counseling to families containing a child or parent of Aboriginal heritage. This service covers the West Kootenay region, including the communities of Kaslo, Nelson, Salmo, Trail, Castlegar, Slocan Valley, Nakusp and the surrounding rural areas. The service is operated by Castlegar & District Community Services
- Children First, funded by the Ministry of Children and Family Development, provides support and leadership to parents and professionals interested in improving services and resources for children who are six years of age and younger.
- ECD Regional Community Development Advisor, funded by the Ministry of Children and Family Development, provides support and leadership to Early Childhood Development Coalition Coordinators and Inter Ministerial professionals throughout the Interior Region of the province who are improving services and resources for children, six and under.
- Nobody’s Perfect, funded by the Interior Health Authority, provides parenting education courses to parents of young children (six and under). These programs are operated throughout the West Kootenay and Boundary region by Arrow & Slocan Lakes Community Services, Boundary Family & Individual Services, Castlegar & District Community Services, Kootenay Kids, North Kootenay Lakes Community Services, Salmo Community Services, and Trail Family & Individual Resources.
- The KBCSC Resource Centre provides consultation and training on a fee-for-service basis to community service organizations and those who work or volunteer in them.
Projects:
- The Aboriginal Mapping Project, funded by the Columbia Basin Trust and Success By Six, is developing a detailed picture of the numbers, distribution, social supports, and cultural assets of the Aboriginal population in the West Kootenay region.
- The Dad’s Project, funded by the Columbia Basin Trust, supported the development of programs and resources for fathers and professionals working with them. The active work of this project was completed in 2007.
- The Healthy Teeth for Healthy Eating Project, funded by the Public Health Agency of Canada and Interior Health's Community Action for Health Initiative, focused on raising awareness and fostering policy change on the issue of inequitable access to oral health care. The Project's primary focus was to promote healthy public policy at all levels and to increase community awareness about oral health and oral health disparities.
- The Spectrum Solutions project, funded by the Columbia Basin Trust and other contributors, is working on improving the network of services for children with special needs (Autism Spectrum Disorder, Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, and other Complex Developmental and Behavioral Conditions).
- Understanding the Early Years, funded by Human Resources and Social Development Canada, is a three-year research project that will begin by mapping the early childhood development resources, programs and gaps in services in the West Kootenay region, then proceed to learn about the types of preschool environments and experiences that develop competence in early childhood and use the research to develop plans to improve the quality of life for young children.
