For New Dads

  • The New Baby Manual for Dads “24 Hour Crib Side Assistance”.  This is a great resource and copies are available at the Kootenay Boundary Community Services Co-op office, 304-625 Front Street, Nelson, V1L 4B6.  Or call us at 250 352-6786 and we can mail you a copy.

Fathering

  • FIRA (Father Involvement Research Alliance): FIRA is a pan-Canadian alliance of individuals, organizations and institutions dedicated to the development and sharing of knowledge focusing on father involvement, and the building of a community-university research alliance supporting this work. Includes resources materials for: Immigrant Fathers, Gay/Bi/Queer Fathers, Separated & Divorced Fathers, New Fathers, Indigenous Fathers, Young Fathers, Fathers of Children with Special Needs
  • Dads CanDads Can is a Canadian search engine for resources for dads regarding: Kids, Children, Dads Rights, Child Custody Law, Fatherhood & Parenting, Family Rights, Child Fathers Rights, and Legal Issues
  • Nanaimo Men’s Resource Centre: This resource centre has an excellent online library of fathering resources including: Fathering & Parenting (info on raising daughters), Mixed Gender parenting, Male Depression, Parental Alienation, Poverty, Relationship Abuse, and legal issues.
  • Abbotsford Men’s Program – This website includes a resource tab with links to other positive fathering sites and recommended parenting books.

  • FIN BC (Father Involvement Network of BC) – Training & Support for Positive Fathering Practices: Resources for professionals and families including a learning network & HealthyFamilies Blog.
  • Father Involvement Initiative – This is a great Ontario network for Dads.  Check out ‘Best Job on the Planet Blog’
  • Minnesota Fathers & Families Network – includes resources for professionals, links & online brochures (of particular interest is the information for unmarried fathers dads raising teens)

Legal Resources

Families Change:  An excellent site run by the Department of Justice. The site provides assistance to children, parents and professionals on the issues of separation and divorce. Good place to start.

For help with Family Law, go to the Family Law in British Columbia website.  It has information about child protection, including:

Family Justice in British Columbia:  Click here to access the  government site with lots of general BC family law information.
 

Canadian Bar Association:  This website takes you to a directory of helpful information when you’re dealing with the initial legal stages of separation, child custody and child support.

Legal Services Society:  BC’s legal aid provider, this website offers online do-it-yourself kits for divorce and other family law procedures.

JP Boyd’s B.C. Family Law Web Resource:  Written in plain English, this websiteis an excellent web site for those unfamiliar with family law rights and procedures.

The B.C. Courthouse Library Society:  This  non profit organization has a website providing access to legal information resources and information services to members of the legal community and public of British Columbia. Contains information about pro bono work, and free legal advice.

Access to Canadian Justice Network: This  website shows links involved in somewhat advanced legal research, best used when you have a specific legal question regarding your case.

Jurist Canada. Legal Education Network:  This website, hosted by University of Toronto, is a good source for legal definitions

Law Student’s Legal Advice Program:  This website provides information on  free UBC student legal services.

University of Toronto Law Library:  A beginners guide to legal research.

Provincial Court of B.C.:   This site has useful links relevant to Provincial Court.

Access Justice:  Click here for information about lawyers dedicated to justice for those you cannot afford it

Canadian Legal Information Institute: A non profit organization managed by the Federation of Law Societies of Canada whose goal is to make Canadian law accessible for free on the Internet

Law Courts Education Society:  LCES is dedicated to improving access to the legal system through hands-on, targeted, two-way education between the public and those working in the justice system.

People’s Law School of British Columbia:  This organization is an independent, non-profit, non-political Society whose purpose is to provide British Columbians with reliable and impartial information about the law.

University of Victoria Law Library:  Click here for access to lots of legal information websites.

The Law Centre:  This website, run by Uvic, has good information including preparing to meet with a lawyer.

Law Courts Education Society:  This useful site  includes video instruction (requires Flashplayer).

B.C. Supreme Court Services:  This service, available only in Vancouver, provides information to help users prepare a family or civil case

British Columbia Vital Statistics Agency:  This site has  information on birth and death registration and certificates and also includes wills notice registration and searches, information on how to change your name, and information on marriage licenses.

Relevant Legislation:  

Divorce Act:  This is the federal legislation that provides for both divorce law and the determination of corollary relief(maintenance, custody and access). Maintenance orders under the Act have effect throughout Canada.

Child, Family and Community Service ActThis act provides for official apprehension of children (under 19 in B.C.) who are believed to be in need of protection of care.

Family Maintenance Act

Family Relations ActProvincial legislation that dictates corollary relief (maintenance, custody, access, guardianship, and the division of assets) and sets out the requirements of a valid marriage contract.
